People love to hate on AI design, and that’s fair.
What started out as fascinating has become commonplace, almost predictable, and dare I say, even boring. With every day that passes it gets harder and harder for our social feeds to surprise us with new architecture we feel like we haven’t seen yet. There’s an AI glut.
Yes, scroll through Instagram, TikTok, or Pinterest and you’ll see it: floating castles, spiraling alien towers, underwater neon cities, and forests of glass palaces glowing like crystals. It’s fantasy architecture at its peak — bold, wild, and surreal. These designs feel like they belongs in a Studio Ghibli film, a Star Wars outpost, or in a game loading screen. They’re terrible, aren’t they?
Or, are they?

Truth be told, we don’t actually hate AI architecture. In fact, we love the fantasy; and if we’re honest, we each have our own favorite version. Personally, my ten year old self wants un underwater mermaid palace made of golden bubbles and aquamarine sea glass!
Pretty dreamy, right?
Maybe the disconnect, that sense of love and hate for AI fantasy architecture, comes from a kind of frustration —the frustration that comes because these concepts are so easy to generate, but they exist only in two dimensions.
They will never exist in real life.
—Or, so we are led to believe!

I’m here to turn this notion on its head. I think that the biggest misconception about fantasy architectural designs is that they’re “just for show.”
That they’re unbuildable.

AI is how we got these crazy design concepts to begin with, but the story doesn’t end there. AI is also the reason why these designs are going to be built in the real world.

If you think about it you come to realize: every design revolution starts with something people once called impossible.
- Gothic cathedrals, with their flying buttresses and impossible stained glass heights, looked like miracles in their day.

- Glass curtain walls? “Unrealistic.” Until Mies and others turned them into the 20th century’s default look.

So while architects may still be drafting condos and offices, the public’s visual diet has shifted. People already see fantasy as normal. They expect more.
